Basic Black

This is my entry for this week's Daily Paintworks Challenge. The challenge was to paint this black raven without using black. Since I rarely use black, this was right up my alley. I mixed the 'blacks' using burnt umber, Alizarin crimson and ultramarine blue, with an occasional bit of pthalo blue. Click here to read more about the challenge and see the other entries.

Basic Black...
has no black,
such black irony,
in an oil painting
that one realizes
after studying the details
of the reference photo
and the details of these
confident brush strokes
that one understands this
fine art is painted by an
accomplished artist;
it leaves this viewer
in awe.
