Perfect Pair

Feathers and polka dots...what could be more perfect?  Recently I've begun using Yellow Ochre to stain the panels....I like the warmth it gives without being too 'pushy' like Cadmium yellow. And here's some fun painting music.

It Takes All Kinds

I don't know where all these feathers came from ....or should I say which birds...but I love 'em all! Especially the spotted ones. I love the way the light shines through the spots on the narrow feather making the shadow more interesting. Here's today's feather painting music.

Feathered Friends

This painting is part of a series that began with a recent Daily Paintworks challenge.  I did one feather painting and was hooked. I've done seven so far. Feathers are personal for me and I've loved painting them. It takes a very light touch. In fact I think I painted this whole thing holding my breath!  I hope you enjoy the series. This is my entry for this week's Daily Paintworks Challenge to paint something in motion. Not sure if I've ever done that before, but have been wanting to paint this chickadee taking off for a while now. The challenge was the perfect impetus. And speaking of motion, here's the music that 'moved' me. :o)

By the Sea Side

I love these creamy white clam shells. The large ones make great natural soap dishes. I'm pleased with the colors in this painting. Somehow they seem different than my usual though I used the same palette.

Pink Petals

I like playing with light. Here are some of the steps along the way.

I toned the panel with Cadmium Red and sketched in the petals.

 

I used a bit of mineral spirits on a paper towel to remove the red tone for the lightest highlights.

 

Then began adding the color beginning with the darks...

 

...and working toward the lights.

 

50 Shades of Gray

This painting is the result of this week's Daily Paintworks' Challenge. The challenge was to try something totally different from what we've ever done before. I decided to do an entire painting in just various shades of gray. It was a blast and the best part is that it sparked an idea for a new series. Yay!  Stay tuned... Here's an awesome painting tune.

Rise

Did I mention...I collect stones? And sea glass...and feathers...and  nests... I think I should just live outdoors. Hmmmm...

Beach Boys II

Matching stones to yesterday's post. Done larger than my usual and on canvas. Yesterday I mentioned I wasn't sure how I felt about canvas after working on panels. For me it's mostly the 'bounce' of it that takes getting used to and the heavy texture. I definitely need to experiment with some other brands and types of canvas. Any suggested favorites? I'd love to hear.

Below are my paintings the owner of 11 Central, a new restaurant in Bangor, Maine, chose to hang. I'll post the others individually over the next few days. Love the brick wall!

The Beach Boys I

Here's the first of the larger paintings I've been working on for the past few weeks. I'll be hanging 8 new large paintings and two of my older  pastels at a restaurant that just opened in downtown Bangor called 11 Central. I've not eaten there yet, but my daughter has (twice!) and she says it's great. I install the paintings tomorrow, so I'll take photos to post. This was my first time working on canvas rather than the Gessobord panels. Not sure how I feel about it yet... I'll let ya know.
