Go with the Fro

This is one of my favorites and the last in this pig series...though he'll show up again for a brief appearance in the next mini series. Stay tuned...it's very Zen. From this porcelain pig series I learned a lot about creating whites and mixing and using grays harmoniously with other colors. I'm also constantly learning about light. I think that's a perpetual lesson. Thanks to my friend Jim, for the cool title. Here's the appropriate music. Pork in Polka Dots

Pigs and polka dots...doesn't get much  better. Here's a sample of the music I listened to while painting. (To continue looking at the art while you listen, right click on the colored word 'music' and go to Open Link in New Tab.)

Back on Top

I love the perspective on this one. All of these in the pig series are done on panels coated with black gesso. I find I've been sticking to that lately and really liking the effect. After the first few paintings in this series, I went into my studio  one day to find our dog chewing on this pig! Porcelain deficiency in her diet?? Anyway, I glued his ear back on , polished some of the rough spots and he's no worse for the wear. Some cool music to paint to. Color Blind

The pig series continues... He looks like a pig in headlights blinded by all that color! I liked the green reflecting on his face. Those things delight me. Here's the painting music. Going Solo

The  porcelain pig series continues...this time with a ceramic version of a plastic Solo cup my sis-in-law gave me for Christmas. I love the humor of that ...especially since the back side of the cup is sort of crushed in. Here's some great painting music I think is appropriate. Miles to Go Before I Eat

Another in the porcelain pig series. I thought he looked like he was gazing wistfully into the distance up there on the mound of grapes, thus the title. And here's some great painting music suggested by a friend. (To continue looking at the art while you listen, right click on the colored word 'music' and go to Open Link in New Tab.)

Match Dot Com

Here's the second in the pig series. Besides it being fun, there is a point to this. The pig gives me great practice working with whites. And the colored object allows me to continue to mix and use grays to offset. Here's the music that had me moving. King of the Hill

I've got another series going here...but first a few thoughts about the generosity of artists...one in particular. I found this little pig at Goodwill a few weeks ago for 89 cents. I immediately had some ideas for painting him but sort of consider this little guy, or a similar one, Carol Marine's signature pig. So I emailed Carol to ask her honest thoughts on the matter. Not surprisingly, she graciously said, "Paint away! " That's Carol...always encouraging, never DIScouraging. So, thanks to Carol, I've had a blast with these! Here's the first of many in the Porcelain Porcine Series. And here's the music that had me rockin'. Adorned

I've never painted a knot before...challenging! There's a lot going on with this ribbon...the sheen of it, the light and shadows, the folds, the polka dots in  shadow and light...phew!  But I love all that warm color. :o) And here's some of the musical inspiration. Juicy

There's a lot going on in this one which can be tricky to pull off...especially in six inches. I'm really pleased with how it turned out. I bought this beautiful fall themed plum and rosy-peach colored plate a long time ago. Just getting around to painting it now. These things take time. ;o) Here's some great painting music. Vine Ripe and Red-y

Lately I've been pondering quality of light and how it affects various objects. I'm particularly interested in transparency and translucency and how to render them with an opaque medium.  I've discovered that not only does the paint color itself impact this (some are more transparent than others) but I can get the effect I want by using more mineral spirits and/or medium (I use Liquin.) Some fun music to paint to. (To continue looking at the art while you listen, right click on the colored word 'music' and go to Open Link in New Tab.)

Half in the Bag

I spotted these gorgeous grapes in paper bags years ago at a country fair. Just came across the reference photo the other day and decided it was time to paint them. I like the translucence of the grapes and the way the light shines through the bags. Here's the music I listened to while painting. Piled

Here's the second of the similar tomato paintings. This one was done on a red ground. I think with the red the colors glow more,  but perhaps yesterday's on the black ground is a bit more dramatic in contrast. Here's the musical inspiration. Stacked

Love painting these little guys...but man, was it ever hard to get them to stay put! This one is done on a black ground. I did a similar painting on a red ground that I'll post tomorrow. Still trying to see how the backgrounds are affecting the painting and to decide if I have a preference.

Inside Looking Out

Here are the persimmons again. I never did get around to eating them before they spoiled, but I so enjoyed painting their waxy orange richness! I really like the colors in this one...and the way the persimmons reflect on the cream colored windowsill. It may be a one hit wonder, but I can NOT stand still for this song. It's the music I painted to today. (To continue looking at the art while you listen, right click on the colored word 'music' and go to Open Link in New Tab.)

Paint Tube Series

I've kind of been wanting to see this recent series of ten paintings all together. So here they are...in the order in which they were painted. (Click on the image to see all ten at once) A pretty colorful group for such a limited palette of six pigments.

Clarity

Here's another white on white painting I mentioned a couple of posts ago. The glass is one I found at Goodwill. My daughter tells me it's a double shot glass. Who knew?? I was pleased with how it turned out. The 'egg' inside is a big chunk of tumbled glass I picked up somewhere. It's translucent and has sort of a mother of pearl color sheen to it. Here's the groovin' music I painted to. (To continue looking at the art while you listen, right click on the colored word 'music' and go to Open Link in New Tab.)
