Walkin' on Sunshine

I painted this for our daughter Molly's 21st birthday yesterday. It seems like just yesterday I was saying the same thing for her 19th birthday. (Click here to view her 19th birthday painting, Red at Heart.) Molly is a creative soul who expresses herself beautifully through her art, her career, her style and her life. When I saw her in these new glittering gold shoes with her colorful tattoo peeking out, I knew I had to paint it. I actually sprinkled some very fine clear glitter into the wet oil paint on her shoes that's not visible in the scan. It's subtle but very cool when the light hits it. Shine on, Molly!

Riches

It was fun to try to capture the glow of the grapes and the metallic surface of the compote.

Lace Effect

Just here trying to paint light again. We have lace curtains throughout our home and I love the way the light shines through them and casts delicate shadows. I've painted the lace pattern on eggs, stones, pears...and now bowls.

Huddle Up

This is the second painting in my recent lighting experiment (see previous post). I wanted that same glow, but with a warmer light...so I applied two coats of black gesso and again left the spaces where the stones would go white. Once the gesso coats were completely dry I applied a cadmium yellow under painting on all of the stones. I wiped most of it off as usual and proceeded with the painting. I like the obvious warm glow of all the stones from the under painting. It's not really apparent in this image, but I also like the subtle shadows cast by the stones on the dark background.
Today's musical inspiration was this(Right click on the colored word 'this' and go to Open Link in New Tab to continue looking at the art while you listen.)

Intervention

I tried a little experiment today. I did two very similar paintings with two different light effects. First of all, I'm having fun working with black backgrounds. I wanted these stones to really glow so I applied two coats of black gesso to the background but left the spaces where the stones would be, white. This painting was the result. Tomorrow I'll post the second painting.  I was stymied... so my daughters came up with this title. Three heads are always better than one. Thanks Sadie and Molly.

Jailbird

I did this painting as part of a Daily Paintworks Challenge. The task was to paint an all white object in full light on some type of printed fabric...using only primary and secondary colors.Well, the color part was a cinch for me since that's pretty much all I use anyway. Having said that, there's a LOT going on here! The light and dark sides of the pot, the shadow of the pot on the stripes of the fabric, the stripes of the fabric reflecting on the pot, the shadow of the handle reflected in the pot. Phew! It could have gotten mind boggling, but all I reminded myself throughout was 'paint what you see'.

In the Drink

I haven't painted enough glass to feel confident with it yet...sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I'm happy to say this glass just sorta painted itself.

Attitude

Forgive me while I indulge my current 'Pears on a Pedestal' whim. Here's one more similar piece. I just couldn't resist this posture and attitude. Talk about a diva!
On another note, so to speak, music is a HUGE part of my art. I NEVER paint without it. And if there's a day when I'm having a hard time getting to it, all I need to do is put on some rock, crank it up...and I'm running to my easel. So I thought I'd occasionally let you know what the musical inspiration was for the day's painting. Today, this is what got me going. On a Pedestal

You may have noticed I have a particular fondness for a certain fruit. So I finally decided to put this sensuous and versatile fruit where it belongs.

The Stones

I love painting these stones. This one was all about the grays...grayed colors, that is. Not a pure color in the bunch. All cool and warms grays I mixed (except the yellow 'white'). The possibilities are endless. Only as I was typing the title here did I realize what music I should have been listening to while painting it! Oh, well...next time.

Spent

I love my new tube wringer (ouch...sounds painful). Not only does it squeeze out every last bit of paint, it leaves you with these funky looking empty tubes! I just love the shadow this one cast...like something right out of Loch Ness.

I just love this orange spotted plate! It's a blast to paint. You'll probably be seeing more of it. And there's a good chance you'll be seeing more pears, too. Ha!

Rainbow

I love painting these smooth beach stones. I like the abstract quality. I painted a similar one earlier (click here to view) but the first began with a cadmium yellow under painting. This one began with cadmium red which added a warmth to it. I like them both.

100 % Pure

I've discovered that what I'm most interested in is not the subject at all so much as the light. I'll paint anything as long as the light fascinates me. The possibilities are endless!

Different Strokes

This is my entry into this week's Daily Paintworks Challenge. Wow - I have such a hard time following the rules! But I had great fun trying...and for the most part, I stuck with the one stroke per color. Sort of. Well I really tried. This is a much needed exercise for me-to lay down a stroke and move on. I enjoyed it and try to incorporate this type of thinking in all my work.
