Most of my recent paintings, including this one, are done on handmade panels. I use acid free mat board for a rigid surface. After coating one side with gesso to prevent curling, I apply 2-3 coats of Art Spectrum Pastel Primer to the front surface. This product comes in various colors, but I prefer white. This allows me to tint or under paint the background with the colors of my choice. I've been using watercolors to do this. For Triplets, after lightly blocking in the placement of the pears, I applied a watercolor wash in a warm peach tone over the entire surface. Then I went in with my pastels to create the painting.
