Rock...and Roll

This begins a series of six paintings with marbles and stones. I've wanted to paint marbles for quite some time but have been a bit intimidated by them. I was delighted to find, I love painting them!  I like how the shadows are such an integral part of this composition. Here's some great new(to me) music for painting. Life's Big Questions

Here's the last in this particular stones series...there's another one coming that includes other objects I've always wanted to paint...stay tuned. As this current series progressed, I learned more about the colors of the stones and how to better recreate their shadows on this surface. Here's today's musical inspiration. Show Me the Way

Really getting to know these stones. I like the scale of this and yesterday's painting. Gotta say too, I'm really taken with this color combination. Here's some of the music I painted to today.  (To continue looking at the art while you listen, right click on the colored word 'music' and go to Open Link in New Tab.)

The Right Direction

I really like the composition of this one and the way the shadows add another dimension to it. Still working on shadows. And here's some of the rockin' music I painted to. (To continue looking at the art while you listen, right click on the colored word 'music' and go to Open Link in New Tab.)

Fall In

I treated the shadows in this one a little differently...and I like it. Here's some of the music I painted to today. (To continue looking at the art while you listen, right click on the colored word 'music' and go to Open Link in New Tab.)

Spiral

The next five paintings in this series are all done on panels coated with black gesso and look a bit more cohesive as a group. I really like the colors in this one. I was pleasantly surprised by the background. I mixed what I thought was a lighter, more neutral color , but when I laid it in, it had this beautiful peachy warmth that I loved with the cooler grayed blues and greens. I ended up using this background color for the rest of the series...and beyond! Here's some rockin' music. Line by Line

More stones. They say paint what you love...and I do. This is the first of a series of six paintings. Though I've recently been painting only on black panels, I went back to the red for this one. I like the glow it creates as it ever so subtly peeks through the rock colors. Here's some of the music that had me jumpin'. Left Right Left

There's a HUGE antique shop not too far from me called The Chicken Barn, and that's exactly what it is...a long two story barn filled with everything you can imagine...glassware, golf clubs, old instruments and tools, feather boas!  I always take tons of photos there. The only drawback is the lighting is fluorescent. I couldn't resist these worn old soft leather shoes and booties. Here's the music I painted to. Fall from Grapes

I did a couple of individual paintings before beginning my next series. I'd like to do more with grapes in the future. Here's some apropos music (To continue looking at the art while you listen, right click on the colored word 'music' and go to Open Link in New Tab.)

Tangent

This painting was sort of an afterthought to the series, so it looks a bit different, though I did use the same stones. I really liked the way the stones' shadow connected with the long thin brush shadow. And after a few random paintings, there's another stones series coming up. I'm excited!

Tumbled

This set up is the result of another one I was trying to accomplish. I was attempting to arrange the rocks by balancing them. They ended up tumbling down before I could work with them...and I liked it, so painted them this way. Serendipitous.
So, as I alluded to yesterday, I love painting series for several reasons. First of all, while the series lasts, it gives me something to look forward to painting each day without having to think about it! Secondly, it gives me the chance to work with the same subjects several times so I can get a better handle on them, (their shape, color, etc) or just approach them in a different way. And thirdly, I like being able to play with the composition and try different but similar arrangements. I have several more series coming up. Here's today's painting music. Stonehenge Revisited

It's really a joy working with the colors of these stones.  More tomorrow about why I LOVE working in a series...but the Celtics are on, after all. Here's the musical inspiration for this painting. Lean In

This begins a series of seven paintings of smooth Cape Breton beach stones. I used some of the same stones for each painting so you'll see a consistent palette throughout. What I liked about this composition is the way the shadow of all the stones joins into one and the triangular shapes the light background cloth forms between each stone. Here's the music that was playing as I danc...er, I mean painted. (To continue looking at the art while you listen, right click on the colored word 'music' and go to Open Link in New Tab.)

Catchin' Some Rays

This is the last in the mini Buddha series...thought I'd bring the pig back for another appearance. Of course, this one was all about the light and the way the single ray fell across the pig and Buddha. I really like the way the light on the Buddha's forehead reflects on the underside of the pig. Here's the music I painted to. (To continue looking at the art while you listen, right click on the colored word 'music' and go to Open Link in New Tab.)

He's Got the Whole World

Here's a little mini series with my daughter's incense Buddha. He was fun to paint...with his uplifted hands just begging to be filled. More practice with shiny porcelain, whites and shadows. Here's some fun old music to paint to. (To continue looking at the art while you listen, right click on the colored word 'music' and go to Open Link in New Tab.)
