Pink and Blue

Here's another of the still life vignettes I enjoy creating so much. I just like the simplicity of the compositions. And here's some music I like to paint to.

Crazy Cat

This is Bone Thug. I didn't flip the image...this was exactly how he was looking at me as he hugged my pillow. He cracks me up! And here's some great music to paint to.

Waiting to Bloom

Though this hyacinth never bloomed, I love the purplish bulb and the way the flower tips tried to push their way out of the spring green shoot. Anyway, the showy blossom would have detracted from the simplicity of this. Here's some music I can't help but boogie to while I paint.

Carrot Tops

I tried a different process with this painting. I normally use Liquin to loosen my paint a bit, but still sometimes have a hard time getting it to flow as well as I'd like on the dry black gesso. I read somewhere that you can paint a thin layer of Liquin onto the canvas before beginning to remedy this. I decided to try it. It certainly made the paint spread, but I felt it was a bit too slick... buttery almost. I may try it again at some point. I made a rollover, below, so you can see the steps in the process. And there's a detail shot of the slick panel with the coat of wet Liquin and the first strokes of orange paint I applied. And here's some BANGIN' music to paint to. :o)

Good Fortune Series - Create Happiness

This is the last in the Good Fortune series. I've enjoyed it! The cellophane was a real challenge as well as getting all this wisdom onto that little strip of paper! "Some pursue happiness, others create it."
Here's some gorgeous music.

Good Fortune Series - Always Be Kind

I'm pleased with the way the shadows are an important part of the composition and how they link the elements together. By the way, if anyone's wondering, I've been using a small Colour Shaper, size 0, firm, to write the words. Easier for me than using a tiny brush with a few hairs to paint in the words.  And I'm crazy about this unique music

A Shot of Color

We're currently in the midst of a significant spring snowstorm. 7" so far and it's predicted to continue through the night. I love it! I don't have much of a green thumb but luckily I do have some plants that survive in my studio and blossom for much of the year. This bloom is from one of my cyclamens. I like this little vase...it's a  transparent peachy color and small...in fact only an ounce big! My daughter informed me when I bought it long ago that it wasn't a tiny vase, but a shot glass...thus the title. I love this music!

Good Fortune Series - Choose to Shine

This was a fun one to paint...never painted soy sauce before. And the fortune: "Choose to Shine."  Here's some appropriate music.

Good Fortune Series - You Are Almost There

I love this encouraging sentiment. "You are almost there." I  initially eliminated the writing and design on the cellophane packaging but decided to add it in the end. I'm glad I did. I like the bit of color it adds there. Here's some of the 'beautiful' music I painted to.

Good Fortune Series - Happiness

This is the beginning of a new series. I call it the Good Fortune Series. I'm excited...I love painting in series. I'm also a quote lover. I collect them, I tape them up all over my computer monitor, my mirror, I send them to friends, I get inspired and encouraged and motivated by them. For the longest time I've pondered how to get words into my art. I've got a few ideas, some pretty straight forward, like this....and others just thoughts that I'm unsure how to execute yet. This is a fortune I really got the other day when we ordered Chinese take out. "You always bring others happiness."  Here's some feel good music.

This is a little rectangular shallow bowl I have, no bigger than my palm. It looks oriental to me. I am having the best time practicing painting shadows.  I like the colors in this one. Here's some sweet easy music to paint to.

Simple Things

Simple things are definitely the best. I love creating these Zen vignettes. Just some of the many shells I've gathered through the years, each one about as big as the pads of your fingers. A friend introduced me to this AWESOME painting music...dubstep violin.  How cool is that?!

Venus

Here's another with the flat black-gessoed background untouched. I'm really pleased with this one. I like the striking contrast and the visible brush strokes in the petals. Yesterday's and today's paintings look great together. I really like working on black. Maybe I'll try some bull dogs playing pool next...
In honor of David Gilmour's 67th birthday today, here's some great painting and relaxing music. That man just keeps getting better...

Fire Down Below

For this painting, I worked on a panel coated with black gesso as I often do, but decided not to cover the background. I like the effect of the flat black gesso as it allows the flower to really come forward...and shine. And here's some very HOT music for painting.

The Fire Within

Another up close view of a bearded iris. I've been working from old reference photos which I sometimes do when nothing new strikes me. I was happy to rediscover these irises. I don't know if it's apparent on your monitor but this painting really glows. Here's the great classic music I listened to while painting. So good.

Ignite

Bearded irises are such exotic flowers I think. I painted several which I'll be posting over the next few days. I seldom go back to a painting once it's finished. But I wasn't happy with the background of this one initially.

I liked the blue gray color, but wanted the flower to stand out more.

So I tried a bit of glazing...twice. And still wasn't satisfied with the contrast.

Ultimately I just mixed some darker gray green paint and redid the whole background. I'm pleased with how it ended up.
