Backside

I find the backs of flowers just as interesting and beautiful as the front. I'm really pleased with this one. My intent was to capture the glow of light coming through the hibiscus petals.
Here's some long overdue musical inspiration.  (To continue looking at the art while you listen, right click on the colored word 'musical' and go to Open Link in New Tab.)

Gone By

I even love the sunflowers when they get all papery and shriveled.

The Down Side

I really like this one. I find when I have a limited time to paint, I'm often pleased with the results. No time to spend picking and fudging. I feel like I kept the colors pure on this one.

Borrowed Beauty

I wish I could grow things like this. I can't. But my friends can! Jim was apologizing saying this hibiscus had 'gone by'. I think it's still glorious!

Well Hung

My friends, Carol and Jim, have the kind of yard that feels like a Zen garden. It exudes peace and a calmness comes over me as soon as I turn into their driveway. Together they've spent years nurturing all kinds of gorgeous natural things...pear and crab apple trees, grape vines, veggies, flowers, rock gardens, sculpture, bees, birds...I love to lie down in the grass and just soak in all that color and life...and peace. That's the kind of people they are, too. This is a pear from one of their trees.

Fine Form

I love the warm gold of Bosc pears. And for some reason, I particularly like the colors in this piece. The bowl is an old ruffle-edged milk glass bowl that belonged to my grandmother.

Gull's Day Out

I spent this past gorgeous sunny Sunday at Schoodic Point with my dear friend, Sue and my two daughters, Molly and Sadie. Though the gulls weren't aggressive, they were rather assertive and one ate out of Molly's hand and off her knee. I shot lots of close ups of these beautiful birds. I particularly like the lit end of this one's beak where the light shines through. What a great time we had lounging in the sun, soaking up the salt air and picnicking on the rocks. And as the sun crossed the sky, I was grateful for the perfect girl's day out.

Somebody to Lean On

3 of my favorite joys of painting:
*Getting that glow
*Using the final strokes to heighten contrast with the lightest highlights and deepest shadows
*Ever so subtly defining, and more importantly losing, edges so they fade into nothingness
This is one painting where I experienced all three. JOY!

Geometry

As always... trying to capture the quality of light. I also liked all the shapes and lines of this one...not to mention that warm vibrant orangey red!

Pure Peach

I'm really pleased with how this one turned out. I wanted to be confident enough to go dark. I love the drama of that high contrast, so I began with a black background and my intent was to remain dark enough in the shadows, that the lights really popped. Sometimes all goes as I envisioned and this was one of those joyous times!
Thought I'd share the steps with you.
As I said, I began with a background of black gesso that was dry.

I placed my peaches where I wanted them and began with my lightest/brightest colors. Wow! You can already see the drama begin to develop.

I continued to add color and develop the form of the fruit.

I was happy to see the peaches really beginning to glow. My plan was working.

On to the background. A few tweaks...and the piece is finished.

Little Red Hen

I loved the way the back light was framing the hen in this old reference photo. I hoped to maintain that in the painting.

He Loves Me

I love the simplicity and unpretentious beauty of daisies. Remember that old game, He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not? Somehow in my childhood innocence, I found a way to cheat... so he always loved me!

Profile

This is the last in my recent trio of sunflowers...for now anyway. It's my favorite. I don't know the name of this type of sunflower but it's positively deep maroon. I like the side view and the way the petals arch backwards. And here's some kickin' music that had me paint-dancing. Crank it up!  (To continue looking at the art while you listen, right click on the colored word 'music' and go to Open Link in New Tab.)
